Our Story
Pacha life Design Studio, founded in the year 2018 is a den for creative souls in
Thrikkaipetta, a village located in Wayanad district of Kerala.
The literal meaning of Pacha in Malayalam is ‘green’ or ‘raw’ and we live by this name in all
aspects of our brand philosophy.
We are an interdisciplinary studio space working at the intersection of art, craft, interior and construction using locally available materials like Bamboo, wood, mud, dry flowers and other natural fibers. We work with traditional artisans in Wayanad and Kerala largely with an aim to generate a sustainable livelihood through access to Design & Market. With an experience of more than a decade, we specialize in Bamboo handmade products, furniture and building skills.
We believe in making strong story-led designs and follow tools of storytelling in our design process. We are inspired by the everyday life of the locals, regional traditions, biodiversity and landscape.
Purpose
As our name suggests – we are green!
We are a team of designers, artists, thinkers, craftspeople, farmers and masons who have
come together to live and practice a sustainable lifestyle. We are inspired by the rich
tradition, flora, fauna and biodiversity of Kerala and work in harmony with nature through
mediums of art, product and architecture.
When we first landed up in Thrikkaipetta, which is also known as the ‘Bamboo Village’, back
in 2012, we instantly fell in love with Bamboo, abundantly and naturally growing in this
tropical region. Ever since, Bamboo, which is the fastest growing grass, absorbs
much more carbon than any other plant and is a great alternative to timber, had all the
valid reasons to become our first love and choice for one of the most sustainable materials
to work with.
Wayanad being a forest landscape is home to numerous indigenous tribal communities who
have been traditionally using Bamboo in all means of their lifestyle since from housing to
everyday products, musical instruments and even food. Marrying the traditional knowledge
with our design sensibilities, we are trying to unwrap the many facades of this amazing
material by working at the intersection of art, crafts, interior and construction.
Kerala is deeply rooted in its culture, traditional art forms, handloom and crafts. One can see
a subtle modernity in its many layers of traditional values. Despite of so much to offer, there
is a lack of design intervention in its artisanal & cultural sector. Besides Bamboo, we also
work with other traditional artisans in areas of product innovation to create meaningful and
purposeful designs.
People
Sustainability is the core of our Design Ideology which is both Environment & Social Impact.
Through our work in products, interior and construction, we engage with traditional
communities and their skills, generating livelihood, at the same time encouraging local
economy business models.
Across value chains, we work with a group of local artisans, masons and farmers in different
capacities of craftsmanship and raw material sourcing. Our makers at Pacha are exposed to
skill development trainings, capacity building and market orientation.
Pacha works with a philosophy of ‘People First’, hence a 100% ‘Human Centric’ approach.
We work on a very personal note with all our artists, craftsmen & extended teams.
All Creative minds & hands perform differently and in their own time zones. We don’t
account productivity with number of hours of work, keeping the mental & physical wellbeing
of our team on utmost priority!
Planet
Pacha works with natural materials and adhere to all sustainable practices to keep the planet
happy!
Why Bamboo?
Bamboo being the fastest growing grass, a renewable resource which absorbs more carbon
than many trees is a great alternative to timber and other high energy intensive materials. It’s
dense rhizome and root system underneath prevents soil erosion. Bamboo is hence the
most sustainable materials of all and holds potential as a nature based solution for climate
change mitigation
We, at Pacha, contribute to environment in our own small ways by choosing and practicing
everything sustainable over anything that causes distress to the planet!
We strongly practice ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ at our studio space and engage in several
upcycling value chains.
We work and live in a village where sustainable practices are a way of life and we believe
that it is the easiest and truest way of leading a sustainable lifestyle – saving one village at a
time and largely our planet Earth !!
We as a team are trying to bring positive change in the lives of people and environment!
